Abstract

1299375 Timed control in electric circuits J MARTIN 10 July 1970 [23 July 1969] 37092/69 Heading G3T [Also in Division H1] Timing control means, for domestic control heating, for example, comprises a plurality of rectilinear scales graduated in time, each scale having one or more pairs of individually manually slidable first contacts 34 and an endless timing belt 60 carrying one or more second contacts 66 for engaging the first contacts in passing. Each pair of first contacts may be connected to a latching relay (not shown) such that, on sequential engagement by a second contact 66, the respective relay is alternately latched on and off. As shown, three belts 60, each having three contacts 66 such that as one leaves the end of the 24-hour scale another arrives at the beginning, are driven by a common synchronous motor 74. Contacts 34 are slidable by means of finger pieces 22, 23, 24, 25, each comprising a clamping nut 32, Fig.4 (not shown), and have conductive portions 36 making contact with connecting strips such as 53 or 55 (or 52, 54), Fig.3 (not shown). The contacts 34 are engaged by wipers 66 with a snap action as they drop off the preceding step of insulating material in which each contact 34 is mounted. The contacts 66 are fed by a strip 68, against which they are automatically pressed as they approach the contacts 34. A knob 76 acts on a clutch (not shown) between motor 74 and drive pulley 72 for manual setting of the belts 60 to the time of day as indicated by a fourth (contact-less) belt carrying members 79 aligned with the contacts 66 on the other belts and moving along the time scale. Lamps 93 indicate when associated circuits are "on". Push-button micro-switches 90, 92 may short out the timer contacts to provide over-riding "on" and "off" pulses respectively. Switches 80, 81 are in series Fig.5 (not shown) with contacts 22, 24 respectively, and when open prevent the "on" action of these contacts, while switches 83 are in series with contacts 23 respectively and when open prevent the morning "off" function. The upper row of switches 94 may control heating to individual rooms. A hinged glass front panel 16 actuates a micro-switch 96 when it is opened to de-energize all contacts during setting thereof.
