Abstract

1299078 Esters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 April 1970 [30 April 1969] 22084/69 Heading C2C Esters of orthophthalic acid are produced by heating the acid, or phthalic anhydride, with a C 4 to C 14 alkanol, removing water-vapour from the reaction mixture and, at least during the later stages of the reaction, withdrawing part of the reaction mixture and introducing it in the form of a spray of small droplets to the vapour space above the reaction mixture. The hourly circulation rate is preferably 4 to 10 times the volume of the reaction mixture. The liquid which is withdrawn may be heated to a temperature 50‹ C. higher than the temperature of the bulk of the reaction mixture. An example relates to the production of dioctyl phthalate by heating phthalic anhydride with excess iso-octanol and a catalytic amount of sulphuric acid in a lead-lined distillation pot enclosed by a steam jacket. Towards the end of the esterification, when the temperature is 145‹ C. and nearly all the reaction-water has been distilled off by azeotropic distillation with refluxing iso-octanol, the circulation pump is started and batch distillation is carried out to remove the last traces of water.
