Abstract

1298998 Thermal cracking STONE & WEBSTER ENG CORP 26 Feb 1970 [26 Feb 1969 9 Feb 1970] 9297/70 Heading C5E Hydrocarbons are thermally cracked to olefins, particularly ethylene and propylene, by feeding an admixture thereof with steam at a weight ratio of steam to hydrocarbons of from 0À5-1À5 through a reaction tube having an inside diameter of 1À75 to 3 inches and being 35 to 130 feet long, maintaining the outlet pressure of the tube at above 45-75 PSIA, maintaining a high hydrocarbon partial plessure at the tube outlet (e.g. 15-44 PSIA), and maintaining a pressure drop across the tube length of 1-15 PSIA, while heating the hydrocarbon feed at a temperature and for a time sufficient to cause cracking to olefins. The feed may range from ethane to crude oil. Apparatus is also described and claimed comprising walls of refractory material defining a chamber, a plurality of radiant heat burners on the walls of said chamber, and at least one tube disposed, preferably vertically, within the chamber, said tube having a length within the chamber of 35 to less than 60 feet and an inside diameter of 1À75 to 3 inches. There may be a plurality of such tubes arranged in banks, each bank being fed by an inlet header to which the feed is passed via a convection pre-heat section, and each bank also having an outlet header connected to quenching apparatus.
