Abstract

1298935 Homopolar machines INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 31 Dec 1969 [2 Dec 1968] 57136/68 Heading H2A In a homopolar machine consisting of a discoidal rotor 1, Fig. 1, carrying conductors 2 coacting with the field produced by a stator winding contained in a cryostat 8 encircling the rotor, stationary conductors 7 being located adjacent the path of movement of the conductors 2 and connected to carry the same current but in a generally opposite direction, the reaction forces on the conductors 7 due to the interaction of the current therein with the field are transmitted through the rotor supporting structure 11 to the foundation of the machine by cylinders 15 attached to discs 10 which support the conductors 7. Stress on the cryostat is thereby avoided. The cylinders are located on the locus of the centres of action of the forces acting on each of the conductors 7. Fig. 3 shows a machine with a drum rotor consisting of a cylinder 16 or a plurality of bars. The stationary conductor 25 (or conductors) surrounds the rotor and is attached to the end portions 34a of the machine frame by L-section rings 33. Thus the forces on the stationary conductor are transmitted to the foundation 32 via the end portions 34a, 34b so that they by-pass the cryostat 24, (For Figures see next column.)
