Abstract
1298861 Purification of tail gases FOSTER WHEELER Ltd 13 Jan 1970 [16 Jan 1969] 1686/70 Heading C1A Tail gases containing H 2 S and SO 2 are contacted with an aqueous solution of an absorbent wherein they react in the presence of the water as catalyst to form sulphur which can be recovered, the temperature of the tail gases being reduced to essentially the dew point during the contact with the absorbent. The aqueous absorbent is an aqueous solution, of a solute of low vapour pressure, the addition of which increases the solubility of H 2 S. Solutes specified are K 3 PO 4 , K 2 CO 3 , Na 3 PO 4 , Na 2 CO 3 , NaAsO 3 , NaAsO 5 , amines, and organic salts such as phenates. The reaction between H 2 S and SO 2 may take place directly, or each may form a salt with the solute and the two salts react to form sulphur and regenerate solute. In the reaction sulphur is formed as a slurry and may be recovered from the said slurry by filtration, settling separation, or by heating to 250-275‹ C. to melt the sulphur depending on the state in which the recovered sulphur is required.
