Abstract

1298463 Testing oils BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 4 Nov 1970 [4 Nov 1969] 53937/69 Heading B1X A method for testing the detergent or dispersant qualities of lubricating oils comprises partialy burning a hydrocarbon fuel by passing it through a heated tube with nitrogen and oxygen, passing the combustion products to the lubricating oil, submitting the mixture so formed to the action of a nitrogen dioxide containing gas, e.g. nitric oxide with oxygen or air, and measuring the amount of sludge deposited. The combustion products may be added to the lubricating oil as a stream or after being collected and condensed and optionally concentrated or neutralised by adding sodium bicarbonate. Water may be added to the oil to increase sludge formation.
