Abstract

1298363 Automatic speed control PLESSEY Co Ltd 3 April 1970 [3 April 1969] 17611/69 Heading G3R The speed of an electric motor is controlled by an impedance network which supplies gating signals to a full-wave switching device in the armature circuit. The network includes a device responsive to radiation which is generated in accordance with the motor speed. In the embodiment shown, a series motor M drives a tachogenerator TG which supplies a lamp LP through an adjustable resistor VR. The lamp illuminates a photo-cell P in a bridge circuit L, C1, C2, and changes in the photo-cell resistance adjust the phase of the bridge output signal which is taken from the junction of a resistor R2 and a neon lamp N. This signal is fed to the primary of a pulse transformer PT whose output is connected to the gate electrode of a bidirectional thyristor T in series with the motor 17. In operation, a change in the motor speed varies the output of the lamp LP, and the bridge network controls the firing angle of the thyristor T to tend to maintain the motor speed at its original setting. In an alternative system a voltage dependent on the motor speed may be obtained by detecting its back E. M. F. instead of by using a tachogenerator.
