Abstract
1298188 Seals for cable joints FURUKAWA DENKI KOGYO KK 19 April 1971 [4 Feb 1970 31 March 1970 (2) 27 July 1970 (2) 27 Aug 1970] 21041/71 Heading H2E A hermetically sealed joint between fluidfilled electric cables comprises a joint-box 2 with each end joined to the respective metal sheath 1 of the cables, there being at each end a spacer 3 between opposed surfaces of the sheath and joint-box, a deformable gasket 8 in which the joint-box end and sheath end are embedded and elastically connected to each other, and a reinforcing layer 9 surrounding the gasket and rigidly connected to the joint-box end and sheath. A copper joint-box 2 is arranged around the ends of the cable sheath 1 with an epoxy resin spacer 3 therebetween at each end, the gasket 8 having been applied in a liquid state and then vulcanized. The gasket may be made of nitrile rubber or a thioplast, while the reinforcing layer 9 may comprise a metal or epoxy resin impregnated fibre glass tape. A union 4 allows entry of oil or gas or escape of air during assembly of the joint, the cable conductors being connected by a pipe 6 and surrounded by paper insulation 7. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) complementary interengaging radial projections are provided on the box and sheath and a separator layer (11) is provided on the inside of the reinforcing layer. A third embodiment comprises an elastic sleeve (12) held in place by binding wire (13) around the box end, sheath and gasket, or as an alternative to the sleeve (12) a heat-shrinkable plastics tube (16) or a lead sleeve (15) welded to the box and caulked into the gasket may be used. Yet another embodiment shows a plumbed joint (14) serving as a spacer, and a final embodiment shows the reinforcing layer comprising a twopart sleeve (17) of metal or reinforced plastics with an opening (18) through which the gasket material can be poured during assembly.
