Abstract

1297714 Chloronitrosylating polymers BASF WYANDOTTE CORP 19 Jan 1971 [21 Jan 1970 23 Nov 1970] 2688/71 Heading C3P Hydrocarbon polymers which may be substituted by halogen atoms or carbonyl, carboxyl, sulphonyl or hydroxyl groups are chloronitrosylated by reacting with nitrosyl chloride or with chlorine and nitric oxide in the presence of a catalyst and an inert liquid reaction medium. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, ethylene/propylene copolymers, chlorinated polyethylene, polystyrene, polymethylstyrenes, polybutadiene, polyisobutylene, polychloroprene, butyl rubber, styrene/butadiene copolymers, polysulphones, polyvinyl halides and polyvinylidene halides. The nitrosyl chloride may be formed in situ by reacting hydrogen chloride with nitrososulphuric acid or an alkyl nitrite, or may be used in admixture with nitric oxide or nitrogen dioxide. The reaction may be catalysed by radiation, heat or an organic peroxide or azo catalyst. Specified inert liquid media include benzene, chlorobenzenes and chlorinated and/or fluorinated aliphatic and alicyclic hydrocarbons. The products may be cross-linked by heating optionally with metal oxides, metal salts, free radical initiators such as peroxides and azo compounds; and optionally in the presence of fillers, stabilizers and plasticizers. Examples describe the reaction of (I) polyethylene in carbon tetrachloride, (II) chlorinated polyethylene in benzene, (III) butyl rubber in carbon tetrachloride, (IV) polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl fluoride in carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, and polystyrene in benzene, (V-VII) polyethylene in trichlorotrifluoroethane, (VIII and IX) chlorinated polyethylene in trichlorotrifluoroethane and (X and XI) chlorinated polyethylene in trichlorofluoromethane with nitrosyl chloride in the presence of ultra violet light; and the reaction of polyethylene in carbon tetrachloride with nitrosyl chloride in the presence of (IV D) benzoyl peroxide and (IV E) azodiisobutyronitrile. The products are cured by heating, optionally in the presence of magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, carbon black, stearic acid, dicumyl peroxide, chlorinated biphenyl and phenyl-#-naphthylamine.
