Abstract

1297217 Baling apparatus SWIFT & CO 28 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 30176/71 Heading B8C Stacks of wood-pulp sheets are baled by placing a stack 20 between top and bottom sheets of wrapping paper, applying a hot melt re-pulpable adhesive from heads 43 to a projecting side portion of each sheet, forming side seams at station 60 by folding the side portions to overlap and applying a compression of greater than 10 pounds per square inch for longer than 5 seconds at an hydraulically operated press it, and similarly forming end flaps bonded by the application of hot adhesive and pressure. The partially wrapped stack is turned through 90 degrees on turntable 92 before proceeding to end flap forming means 114 and adhesive applicators 168. Both presses 76 have anti-buckling plates 88 to engage those faces of a stack which are not under pressure from seaming plates 84. Needles in the faces of plates 84 perforate the folded flaps to assist adhesive penetration. Endless belt conveyers 31 52, 74, 92, 106, 176 carry the stacks through the successive packaging stations. The wrapped stacks are discharged for binding with wire in vertical piles.
