Abstract

1296741 Volume control circuits INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 May 1970 [21 May 1969] 24112/70 Heading H4R A variable impedance includes a "T" network each arm of which comprises a plurality of parallel branches each including at least one unidirectional conducting device, a current generator being arranged to control the impedance of the network by feeding a current into a node. Various embodiments using diodes and transistors as unidirectionally conducting devices are described. The networks may be used as feedback paths in gain controlled amplifiers and an auxiliary network may be provided in parallel with the feedback path or in series with the amplifier to provide dynamic compensation for component characteristic variations due to changes in ambient conditions. It is also stated that the networks could be used in radio receivers or data transmission systems. As shown a feedback path for an amplifier Aop includes a balanced "T" network of diodes. The arms A, B, C and D, E, F of each "T" each comprise m, p and n-m branches each including a series of h diodes. A current generator I is arranged to cause a current to flow between the nodes of the "T" networks. The impedance of the feedback path varies generally linearly with the magnitude of the current. Mathematical theory is given showing how the impedance and current are related to the numbers m, p and n-m and shows that the choice of these numbers alters the range of current over which the impedance/current relationship is substantially linear.
