Abstract

Field carriages; naval and garrison carriages and mountings.-Consists in elevating and training gear comprising a rotary shaft, a sliding block engaging slotted or forked members on the gun, and balls fitting in helical grooves in the shaft and block and acting as the transmission elements.. In the elevating- gear shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, the gun is turned about trunnions b by a nut h acting on slotted arms d depending from the gun. The nut is traversed by a screw g. Both the nut h and the screw g are formed with semicircular helical grooves m into which the balls n fit. The balls are retained in the nut by stops o. In a modification, Fig. 5, the nut is provided with an external conduit r to allow the balls to circulate. In another modification, Fig. 6, the screw and nut are formed with deep square threads having balls w between the working faces.
