Abstract
1296709 Photographic powder imaging A E STALEY Mfg CO 21 Nov 1969 [5 Feb 1969] 41809/69 Heading G2C Powder images are formed from a solid lightsensitive organic layer which is 0À1-40Á thick and capable of producing an image having a reflection density of 0À2-2À2 in a standard test procedure, by (1) imagewise exposing, (2) applying powder particles having an average diameter along at least one axis of at least 0À3Á but less that 25 times the thickness of the light-sensitive layer to physically embed (as defined) a monolayer of particles in either the exposed or unexposed areas of the light-sensitive layer at a temperature below the melting points of the powder and layer, and (3) removing the non- embedded particles. Light-sensitive elements useful in the process may have a light-sensitive layer comprising an organic film-forming substance free from terminal ethylenic unsaturation and at least one photo-activator capable of producing free-radicals or converting light-rays into light-rays of longer wavelengths. The examples describe the use of light-sensitive layers comprising (a) one or more of partially hydrogenated rosin acids and their glycerol ester, lecithin or an ether-insoluble fraction thereof, partially hydrogenated rosin acids, wood rosin, hydrogenated castor oil, castor wax, copoly (α-methylstyrene/vinyltoluene), coumarone-indene resin; hydrogenated rosin methyl ester, polyethylene terephthalate/sebacate, polyethylmethacrylate, polybutylmethacrylate and copoly (vinyltoluene/butadiene), and generally (b) one or more of benzil, 4-methyl-7- dimethylamino-coumarin, FeCl 3 and benzoin; additionally in Example 25 a long list of photoactivators for a lecithin fraction is given. The exposed layers are developed with carbon-black generally dispersed in copoly (vinyltoluene / butadiene), iron oxide, a xerographic toner, FiO 2 , glass beads, starch granules, coke or stainless steel beads, or with dyed polyvinyl alcohol, carboxypolymethylene, copoly (vinyltoluene/butadiene), polystyrene, polybutymethacrylate or starch. Images formed from dyed powder are intensified by applying steam or organic solvent to imbibe the dye into a layer under the light-sensitive layer.
