Abstract
1296042 Making rollers ERNEST SCRAGG & SONS Ltd 30 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969] 58485/69 Heading B3A A cylindrical roller, for scoring or shearing a film during the formation of filaments, is formed by grinding the surface of the roller to an accuracy of at least 25 microns and forming a surface relief pattern either by cutting or etching helical or annular grooves in the surface or by forming ridges by helically winding wire around the roller. The grooves may have a width of about 100 microns and may be cut by a diamond stylus rigidly held in a tungsten carbide block. The ridges may be formed by helically winding a hard stainless steel wire, having a diameter of between 50 and 300 microns, around the roller and retaining the wire by using an epoxy resin adhesive or a shallow helical groove in the face of the roller, or by welding or brazing. The wire or grooves may be in the form of a single or multi-start helix and more than one layer of wire may be wound on the surface.
