Abstract

1295607 Thermionic-cathode tubes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 15279/71 Heading H1D Apparatus for producing noise signals in high frequency circuits comprises a vacuum diode having a filamentary cathode 5 of an anode 4, and a coaxial line in which the anode is part of the inner conductor 32 and the cathode is coupled for high frequencies to the outer conductor 33. The cathode of thoriated W is supported within the concentric stainless steel anode 4 at one end by means of a fixed connecting pin 2 and at the other end by means of a slidable contact portion 8 connected by tension spring 9 to connection pin 17. The ends of anode 4 are connected to coaxial insulating cylinders 3 and 6 respectively and the outer ends of the insulating cylinders are connected to conducting cylinders 1 and 7 respectively. Slidable contact portion 8 is provided with holes 15 for the purpose of evacuation and an Al coating to make electrical contact with cylinder 7 and to prevent sticking under vacuum. The anode has an outer screw thread 19 which engages a corresponding thread provided in an aperture in stainless steel inner coaxial conductor 32. One end of cathode 5 is conductively connected via cylinder 7 to electrode 38 which is secured by insulating bolts 39 to outer conductor 33 and separated from conductor 33 by an insulating foil 40 to provide a capacitative coupling between the cathode and the outer conductor. The other end of cathode 5 is similarly capacitatively coupled to the outer conductor by means of resilient contact sleeve 41 of phosphor bronze and electrode 42. A voltage of 70-150 volts is connected to inner conductor 32 and a supply of 1-2 volts at 20 mA and 20 kHz is connected to the cathode between pins 2 and 17. Circular grooves 46 and 47 are provided in the outer and inner conductors respectively at both sides of diode 30 for impedance matching. Pin 13 is provided for a getter (not shown) and the pins 2, 10, 13 and 17 may be made of Mo.
