Abstract
1295486 A method of improving the wall adhesion of cast explosives WASAGCHEMIE GmbH 30 Nov 1970 [4 Dec 1969] 56778/70 Heading F3A A method for improving the wall adhesion of cast explosives in the shells of grenades, comprises coating the inside surface of the shell with a lacquer or other coating material containing a small quantity of a fusible, brisant explosive which is soluble in organic solvents, whereby, when the explosive melt is poured into the case or shell, the explosive particles present in the coating melt to leave small depressions which become filled by the explosive melt and, in this way, solid explosive bridges extending into the coating are formed on cooling, thus guaranteeing effective wall adhesion. The coating contains 10-20% by weight of explosive. In one example, the inside surface of a grenade shell is first covered with a red oxide primer and then sprayed with a lacquer consisting of the same red oxide primer with 15% by weight TNT added to it. After the second lacquer has dried, the grenade is preheated to the temperature required for casting, and filled with a mixture consisting of 60% hexogen and 40% of TNT. In another example, the inside surface of a shell case is coated with an asphaltic layer containing 17% TNT prior to filling.
