Abstract

1295227 Character recognition SIEMENS AG 19 April 1971 [18 March 1970] 24814/71 Addition to 1281626 Heading G4R In a character recognition system as described in parent Specification signals representative of the contours of the outline of the character are stored. The course contour structure of the character is compared with reference structures to determine which reference most closely matches the scanned character. The reference structure represents a group of characters, e.g. 5, 6, 9, which have the same coarse contour structure. To determine which of the characters in the group most closely matches the scanned character the store is read to provide signals representing parts of the contours of the character, these parts being sufficient to identify the character. The signals may represent the ratio ho2 : ho1 Fig. 5a (part shown), for example. The probability of the identification being correct is noted at each stage in the recognition. If the probability reaches a certain level it is assumed that the character is correctly identified and further investigation is stopped.
