Abstract

1295031 Tyre underinflation indicator BENDIX CORP 1 Jan 1970 [22 Jan 1969] 61/70 Heading B7C [Also in Division G1] A fluid pressure sensing device 10, 11 for detecting pressure changes in a rotating chamber 14 comprises a piston 28 movable by pressure changes within a cylinder 26 having an open end 27, a magnet 32 located axially of the cylinder, a tubular magnetic shield 31 surrounding the magnet, the magnet and shield being relatively, axially movable in response to movements of the piston, a resilient means 34 for biasing the piston against the fluid pressure, and a magnetic flux sensing coil 11 of conductive wire to be stationarily positioned near the rotational path of the magnet, the coil being suitable for connection to a warning system. In a first embodiment permanent magnet 32 is immovably mounted within a cylinder 26 of non-magnetic material which is open at 27 to the pressure being sensed. Piston 28 is biased against this pressure by spring 34 and has a part 31 attached (called the keeper) which at the correct pressure surrounds the magnet (Fig. 2, not shown). Piston 28 and keeper 31 are of magnetic material so that at the correct pressure, the magnetic flux hardly if at all extends beyond the end 33 of the cylinder. When the pressure is reduced, the piston and keeper withdraw from the magnet as shown in Fig. 3 and the flux extends beyond end 33. Alternatively (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) the magnet (41) is mounted on the piston stem (39), the keeper (42) is fixed, and reduction of pressure in the chamber causes the piston to retract the magnet (41) into the cylinder and into the shield provided by the keeper (42) thus removing the flux outside of the cylinder. The flux, when outside of the sensing device, passes through coil 11 as the chamber rotates and generates an e.m.f. which provides a warning signal by causing a light to flash (Fig. 6) or by operating a switch (Figs. 7, 8) causes a light to come on or go off as desired. Fig. 1 shows the device 10 in place on a vehicle wheel, detecting pressure in an inflated tyre.
