Abstract

1295020 Sharpening machine cutters in situ KARL REICHERT GmbH [trading as KRAUSS U REICHERT SPEZIALMASCHINENFABRIK] 27 May 1971 [27 May 1970] 17552/71 Heading B3D [Also in Division B4] A machine for cutting a pile of cloth 12 comprises a reciprocable knife 18 and a reciprocable sharpening head 29, the head 29 including two levers 57, 58 pivotable transversely of the reciprocation to bring grinding means into contact with respective sides of the knife 18 under the control of an element 63, acted on by an adjustable brake 66-73 during head reciprocation to act through a linkage for grinding one side or the other of the blade 18 according to the stroke direction of the head 29. The head 29 pivotably supports a linkage lever 61, the control element 63 being adjustably locked to a pin 62 of the lever 61 by a set screw 64 cooperating with one of a range of depressions 65. On a downward stroke of a bar 27 supporting the head 29 for reciprocation, the element 63 is drawn between parts 69, 70 of the brake, against the action of a spring 66. The lever 61 is thus urged by the drag of the brake to pivot about its mounting, a slot 60 in its lower arm acting on a pin 59 to pivot a double lever 56 about a bushing 30. The lever 58, rigid with the double lever 56, thus urges a grinding belt 43 into engagement with the knife 18 against the action of a spring (51), Fig. 2 (not shown). On the return stroke of the bar 27, the brake acts on the element 63 in the opposite direction, corresponding pivoting of the lever 56 applying a grinding belt 42 to the knife 18 by means of the lever 57. Drive for the belts 42, 43 is supplied by a shaft 26 through a telescopic connection and gears 33-35, (36), and the element 63 has inoperative portions of reduced cross-section at each end to limit the extent of the grinding operation. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the element 63 is connected to the pin 62 by means of an axially locked rotatably adjustable sleeve (76) on the element 63, a set screw (78) of the pin 62 being engageable with a helical groove (77) of the sleeve (76). In an alternative construction, Fig. 6, the grinding means comprises wheels 98, 99 on respective arms 91, 92 forming the two levers.
