Abstract

129,477. Robertson, J. H. July 27, 1918. Field carriages; mountings; armour-clad vehicle mountings.-Relates to observation apertures for the shields of armoured vehicles, guns, and the like, of the kind described in Specification 128,607, comprising a chamber having front and rear observation slots, and consists mainly in adapting the upper and lower portions of the chamber to converge to form the front slot, one of the portions extending in advance of the other, and carrying an inclined face to deflect bullets and the like into the interior opposite portion of the chamber. The invention also comprises various details of construction. One form of the device is shown in section in Fig. 1. The chamber A is of cylindrical form with either a circular or a pear-shaped cross-section, and is formed from two portions a, a<1> which converge forwardly to form the front sighting slot b. The portion a carries a bullet-deflecting plate d, which may be integral with the chamber or be an auxiliary attachment thereto. A second plate may be arranged inside the chamber, or baffle-plates each provided with a slot may be provided. The interior of the chamber A is lined with cushions e of rubber compound or the like. The rear sighting slot c may be fixed, or adapted to slide forwardly or rearwardly in the chamber as shown in Fig. 8, and its parallel inner faces may be provided with ratchet-like teeth to trap stray bullet &c. splashes. According to the Provisional Specification, the rear slot may be provided with a magnifying eyepiece. The chamber is rotatably mounted in bearings g in a frame h riveted to the shield, the gaps between the chamber and the frame being protected by one or more forwardly-projeoting plates i between which and the frame is provided cushioning material e. The bearings g permit only elevation or depression of the sight; but the device may be mounted on a part-spherical joint for all-round observations, and may be duplicated for binocular vision.
