Abstract

1294555 Hypochlorous acid; calcium hypochlorate OLIN CORP 6 Aug 1970 37995/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division C2] Hypochlorous acid free from chloride is prepared by mixing at from +10‹ to- 30‹ C. an aqueous solution of chloride and hypochlorous acid with a solvent selected from lower alkyl ketones, lower alkyl cyanides and lower alkyl esters of lower alkanoic acids and separating the resulting solution of hypochlorous acid from the aqueous phase. The aqueous hypochlorous acid solution may be prepared by chlorination of an alkaline compound (e.g. oxide, hydroxide or carbonate) of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The solvent is preferably methyl ethyl ketone. Calcium hypochlorite may be prepared by (1) mixing lime with a solution of hypochlorous acid in a solvent as above, the molar ratio of hypochlorous acid to lime being at least 2:1 to form a slurry of calcium hypochlorite dihydrate and (2) separating the calcium hypochlorite dihydrate from the slurry. A solution of hypochlorous acid in the solvents disclosed may be used in the preparation of chlorohydrins (see Division C2).
