Abstract

1294445 Magnetic storage devices POST OFFICE 31 March 1970 [9 April 1969] 18163/69 Heading H3B In a method of making an array of thin film storage elements, an apertured thin film is annealed in a magnetic field to produce an easy axis of magnetization, and is then fixed to an insulating non-magnetic substrate 4, Fig. 2, so that areas of the film may be etched away to form individual elements 5. Each element has at least one aperture 2 therein, and the easy axis runs around the circumference as shown in Fig. 4. The annealing may be from above the Curie point of the film, or may be carried out isothermally below the Curie point. The substrate has suitable disposed holes (not shown) for the element drive conductors to pass through. The elements and holes may be circular, rectangular or elongate, e.g. elliptical. The elements may each contain several apertures, and may have several magnetic paths, e.g. transfluxors. The drive conductors may be threaded through the elements or deposited through them by the printed circuit technique of Specification 1,291,236.
