Abstract

1294109 Air cushion vehicles B E BERGSTROM 30 Dec 1969 [8 Jan 1969] 63258/69 Heading B7K In an air cushion vehicle having two longitudinal cushions and air passages at the stern of the vehicle, each passage comprising an inlet section 3 and an outlet section 4 with a fan 5 being mounted between the inlet and outlet section; each outlet of section 4 communicates with one cushion and provides a propulsion jet controlled by pivotal flaps 17 for proportioning the delivery between the cushion and the propulsion jet. Three keel-like bodies 10, (11) and (12), defining between them the air cushions, are hollow and made of deformable material and are supplied with air tapped from the outlet of the fan by pipe 22 having a non-return valve. The front ends of the air cushion spaces are limited by a flexible wall having a rigid portion 13. The embodiment of Fig. 4 comprises a modified stern portion including a space 19 for holding pressurized air which communicates with the outlet section 4. The top portion of the stern consists of flexible material walls and the lowermost portion is constituted by an air cushion supplied with air delivered rearwardly and downwardly through apertures 20 which forms an air curtain. A hydrofoil member 21 may also be provided.
