Abstract

1293594 Coiling yarn into packages DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP 13 Nov 1969 [18 Nov 1968] 5569/69 Heading D1F An apparatus for building a teasionless yarn package comprises a turntable 36, Fig. 2, a spindle 12 projecting upwardly therefrom, a rotating yarn supply means 34 depositing overlapping helical coils of yarn around the spindle 12 on the turntable 36, means 90 for rotating the turntable. at a lower speed than the rotating yarn supply means 34, and means 94 to 104 for lowering the turntable 36 at a predetermined rate. Yarn Supply Means 34. Nip rolls 41, 42 feed the yarn 38 to an aspirator 40 and thence to a yarn coiling tube 34 that is rotated about the spindle 12 via a drive tape 56 acting on a whorl 54. The rotation of the whorl 54 can be stopped by a plate 58 when suitably positioned by a piston 60. Moving Spindle 12 and Turntable 36 away from the Winding Station and Replacing it with a Fresh Spindle and Turntable. An operative spindle 12 and turntable 36 and a spare spindle and turntable are mounted at opposite ends of upper and lower plates 68, 70 rotatable about the axis of a central shaf' 66. The operative spindle has a whorl 88 at its lower end that is driven by a tape 90. When a package is complete, a piston and cylinder means 80 causes a chain 76 to rotate the shaft 66 and thus the plates 68, 70 through half a revolution about the axis of the shaft 66 to cause the whorl 88 of the wound package to move away from the tape 90, and the whorl 88 of the empty spindle to move into engagement with the tape 90. Means for Lowering the Turntable 36. The turntable 36 rotates with the spindle 12 but is axially displaceable up and down. the length of the spindle by means of a pair of semi-circular segments 100 upon which the turntable rests. The segments 100 are carried by a plate 96 that is slideable, on rods 94. The plate 96 is lowered by a pneumatically operated piston 101 that exerts a downward force through linkage 102. A let-off chain 104 allows the plate 96 to be lowered at a predetermined rate. Opening and Closing Semi-Circular Segments 100. When closed, the semi-circular segments form a continuous circle surrounding the spindle 12. The segments 100 are carried by individual plates 98 mounted on a common pivot pin 118. The pivot pin 118 is slidably mounted in a slot 124 in the plate 96. A pair of lever arms 126 are pivotally secured at one end to a fixed post 128 on the plate 96, the other ends of the lever arms 126 being pivotally secured one to a post 130 on plate. 98 and the other to a post 132 on the other plate 98, the posts 130, 132 being interconnected by a tension spring 134 biasing the arms 126 towards each other. As a full package swings away from the winding station, a spindle, cup 86 will engage one of the semi-circular elements 100 causing the elements 100 to move apart as shown in Fig: 5 and move the pivot pin 118 to the right of the posts 130, 132 so causing the spring 134 to hold the semicircular segments in their open setting. When the plates 68, 70 have performed half a revolution the empty spindle 12 moves into position under the coiler head 34 and a cam 92 on the empty spindle 12 engages the pivot pin 118 and forces it to move to the left of the posts 130, 132 thus causing the spring 134 to close the semi-circular segments 100. The Spindle 12. Upper and lower collar members 110, are fixed on the spindle 12. A plurality of wire members 108 interconnect these collars and are pivotally supported in said collars so as to be capable of swinging away or towards a perforated central tube 105 of the spindle. During a winding operation, as the spindle 12 is rotated by the whorl 88, the legs 116 that constitute the turntable 36, rotate with the spindle 12. Due to said rotation. the wire members 108 tend to assume, an expanded setting but are prevented from doing so by engagement with a cup 86 at the bottom of the spindle. When a package is complete and the spindle and turntable have been removed from the apparatus, the wire members 108 are, pivoted to their extreme outward position where they engage the ends of the L-shaped members 114 to firm-up the newly wound package. The wire members 108 are. then rotated inwardly adjacent the hollow centre member 105 to provide a space around the spindle to allow the yarn to bluk when placed in a pressurized steam chamber. After the yarn package has been bulked in a steam chamber it is removed from the spindle 12 and mounted on a dye (17) tube, Fig. 1 (not shown) for dyeing.
