Abstract

1293423 Polyphenylene ethers GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 13 March 1970 13 March 1969] 12263/70 Heading C3R Polyphenylene ethers of formula where Q and Q<SP>1</SP> are aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl radicals and n is at least 100, are obtained by reacting phenols of formula with gaseous oxygen in a solvent in the presence of a complex catalyst formed from a non-basic cupric halide, a primary or secondary amine and an alcohol, the amount of alcohol not being more than 5% by volume of the reaction mixture including the phenol, solvent and complex catalyst. In examples polymers are obtained from 2,6-xylenol, the catalysts being formed from anhydrous cupric bromide, aqueous cupric bromide, anhydrous cupric chloride, din-butylamine, methanol and isopropyl alcohol.
