Abstract
1293350 Welding by fusion BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 28 Nov 1969 [20 Dec 1968] 60770/68 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for short circuit arc welding comprises a rectified single phase power source and an energy storage device together with a switching device which is operative to switch the energy storage device so that it augments the rectified single phase source during the periods when the arc is short circuit. By arranging that the switching device is responsive to the voltage between the electrode and the workpiece, the "dip frequency" can be greatly increased relatively to that in the prior art, namely in the order of 100-250 cycles per second. In a short circuit arc welding system a consumable electrode 4 is fed towards a workpiece 8 by means of feed rolls 6, the weld zone being indicated at 10. A single phase supply, obtained from an A.C. source E and a transformer T, is rectified by a full wave rectifier Z and fed to a smoothing circuit S. A regulating unit 12 is connected across the output of the rectifier Z and a serially connected switching device 16 and energy storage device 14 is connected to the outlet of the smoothing circuit S, in parallel with the electrode A and workpiece 8, the regulating unit 12 being connected to the junction between the switching device 16 and the storage device 14. When an arc exists between the electrode and workpiece the switching device 16 is non- conductive so that the arc is supplied only from the rectified single phase supply by way of the smoothing circuit S. When the electrode 4 " dips " into the weld 10 thereby short circuiting the arc, the switching device 16 becomes conductive and the energy stored in the device 14 augments the rectified single phase supply so causing rapid "burn-back" of the electrode 4 to re-establish the arc. The switching device 16 may be a diode or a thyristor and the storage device 14 a capacitor or an accumulator. The smoothing circuit comprises inductors and a capacitor in a T configuration and the inductors are wound on magnetic cores with non-uniform air-gaps therein. The inductors may have tapped windings and more than one circuit having series connected devices 14, 16 may be used.
