Abstract

129,307. Macgregor, A. A. Oct. 5, 1917. Gyroscopic apparatus.-Apparatus for use in steering aircraft comprises a gyroscope 3 so mounted that the axis of spin remains horizontal while the course has a constant azimuth, but precesses to indicate to the airman any lateral movement out of a straight course; a scale 9 may turn with the gyroscope and read against a fixed pointer 11 and also against a freely swinging pendulum 10. The axis of the gyroscope turns in bearings on a frame 6 which is provided with adjustable brackets 7 carrying spindles 8 by which the frame &c. is supported so as to be pendulous about a fore-and-aft line. The brackets may have a series of holes 25 through any of which setscrews 26 may pass to secure the brackets to the frame 6. One of the spindles 8 has secured to it an arcuate scale 9 and may carry the pendulum 10. The gyroscope may be enclosed in a casing 12, 13 bolted to the frame 6, and may carry vanes 5 so that it may be driven by the air passing through openings in the casing 13, the openings being capable of being closed by sliding and folding shutters 14. A brake block 15, mounted on a square rod 16 adjustable by means of a milled nut 18, may be arranged to bear on one of the brackets 7. Oil-cups 20 may be provided for the lubrication of the bearings of the gyroscope 3, and holes 21 may permit the drainage of water from the casing 12. The base 1 carrying the pedestals 2 upon which the spindles 8 rest may be mounted on springs 19 so that landing shocks are absorbed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 117,827.
