Abstract

1292542 Control of A.C. motors BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 26 Jan 1970 [28 Jan 1969] 3633/70 Heading H2J A squirrel cage motor has a first set of stator windings 21, 23, 25 whose ends are joined to form star connections through diode bridges 31, 33, 35, each associated with one of a group of thyristors 41, 43, 45. The motor has a second stator with windings arranged like the first windings, the stator fields rotating at the same speed and in the same direction. The rectifier groups are operated at equal frequency but with mutual phase displacement whereby the star connections are successively and periodically opened and closed at a rate which differs from the mains frequency. The stator field rotates at the differential frequency to entrain the rotor. Regarding commutation, when thyristor 41 is conductive, for example, the star-connection of winding 21 is established. If the thyristor 43 is now triggered, capacitor 53 discharges so that a quenching current for the thyristor 41 is derived through commutation transformer 71. A choke 61 prolongs the cut-off period of the thyristor 41. By varying the mains frequency, the motor may operate above synchronous speed. Reversal and regenerative action is also provided.
