Abstract

1292296 Liquid transfer devices; chromatographic sampling and elution CHOAY SA 3 Dec 1969 [16 Dec 1968] 59015/69 Heading B1X A liquid transfer device comprises a vertically reciprocable distributor 3, Fig. 1, having elution heads 7a, 7b connected to an elution pump (not shown) via tubes 9a, 9b. Upon descent of the distributor the heads 7a, 7b engage containers 4a, 4b located along one radius of an indexable turntable 1. The turntable 1 is indexed by means of the abutment of a peripheral peg 12 by a lower end of an inclined surface 16, Fig. 2, of a lever 13 which pivots about pin 14 until its upper arm 13a engages a surface 19, by which time the peg 12 has travelled in the direction of arrow 17 whereupon the lower end of the surface 16 contacts a following peg 12a so preventing further turntable movement. The distributor 3 is prevented from descending further by means of its base 22 engaging table 23, however the elution heads continue to descend against the bias of a spring 24 to engage the containers 4a, 4b The device has particular application in the chromatographic analysis of amino acids when ion exchange resin filled columns are placed below the containers 4a, 4b, which in this case have perforated bases, so that the samples and eluents can be passed to the columns from the elution heads. In chemical analysis samples may be withdrawn from the containers or samples and/or reagents added thereto.
