Abstract
1292106 Artificial insemination devices V S BABEY 13 May 1970 [15 May 1969] 23067/70 Heading A5R An artificial insemination applicator device 10 is for use with a hollow thin-walled plastics semen straw (16), Fig. 2 (not shown), of tubular construction adapted to contain a predetermined semen dosage, and having a movable plug 22, 23, 22 internally disposed at one end thereof, the other end of said straw being adapted to be opened for discharge of the contents therefrom, said applicator device comprising: an elongated rigid tubular body 11; an ejection tip member 14 formed of synthetic plastics material secured, or securable, at one end of said tubular body and having a discharge pasageway extending therethrough; a sealing extension member 31 of generally frusto-conical tapering shape which is formed integrally with said ejection tip and which, when the tip is secured to said one end of the tubular body extends inwardly into said tubular body, said extension member having a top 32 and a base 33, there being an opening extending from said top to said base and connected to said discharge passageway; and an operating rod 25 removably insertable into said body at the other end thereof for engagement, in use, with the plug in a said straw within said body. Preferably the tip 14 is moulded separately from the tubular body 11, and the top surface 30 of the annular body 27 has an annular lip 35 positioned between the outer surface of the annular body 27 and the base 33 of the extension member 31. The body 11 and the ejection tip 14 are then welded together by a machine producing ultrasonic frequency vibrations. The open end 17 of the semen straw (16) is forced on the frustoconical outer surface of the extension member 311 providing a tight seal. A further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), incorporates an outer sleeve or collar (40) on the ejection tip 14 to fit around the end of the body 11 to avoid roughness occurring at the welded junction due to "flashing" of the melted plastics.
