Abstract
1292003 Centrifugal separators; air cleaner UNITED FILTRATION CORP 8 Jan 1970 [10 Jan 1969] 949/70 Headings BIT and B2P A dry-type air cleaner, e.g. for an i.c. engine, comprises a cylindrical housing 12 within which is arranged a cylindrical filter element 14 defining with the housing an annular space 22 in which in operation the air is caused to swirl helically whereby contaminants in the air are centrifugally separated against the wall of the housing, the cleaner being provided with unloading means 20 for the contaminants comprising a duct 52 which communicates with the annular space 22 and with a power-driven, fan or blower 60 for for creating reaction through the duct. The filter element consists of filtering material 26 held between inner and outer perforated annular plates 24, 28 and an end cap 30 and is forced against a seal 32 and an annular end plate 34 of the housing by means of a screw 38. The filter element is centered in the housing by means of a locating device which may be in the form of a wire body 40 inside the filter element or in the form of an annular shoulder or positioning buttons or projections outside the filter element. The air to be cleaned may be introduced through a tangential inlet 16, a shroud 35 being provided to prevent the dirty air impinging directly on the filter element. Alternatively, the inlet 16 could be axially disposed in the form of an annulus at the left-hand end of the housing, or radially disposed on the side of the housing, and have internal vanes or guiding surfaces to set up a helical swirl of the incoming dirty air. The duct 52 comprises an adapter 44 and the upper portion of a cover 54 which is open at its lower end 58 and which houses the fan or blower 60 driven by an electric motor 62. Alternatively, the fan or blower may be mounted remotely from the air cleaner.
