Abstract

1291789 Punched document reader F W PFLEGER 17 Feb 1971 4824/71 Heading G4M Documents to be read and copied are supported on a slotted plate 201 in which depending lugs 213 on a plate 210 and pads 214 riding on a lower plate form compartments receiving documents 101. A blank 102 is carried by slidable pivotally mounted gripping arms 312, 314 arranged to open on retraction when arm 316 engages cam 317. Each document carrier is provided with teeth co-operating with a pivotally mounted stop (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) to locate the card in a column reading or punching position. Gaps may be provided in the teeth to allow portions of either the read or the data receiving card to be passed over. The data sensor has a punch block 120 reciprocating in channels 128 in a side frame of the reader and moved by bell crank 121 and eccentric 122 on shaft 123. The punch block carries a document sensing arm 140 pivotally mounted to the block and spring loaded to move sensing fingers 143 towards the document 101. The sensing arm has a portion 141 arranged to contact a pivotally mounted interposer arm 160 coupled to arm 140 by spring 175. Block 120 carries a punch 111 sliding in guide block 112 and co-operating with die 110 to perforate document 102 if a perforation exists in document 101. During movement of a document, cam 170 holds arm 140 away from the document and block 120 is partly retracted. When both documents are stationary a clutch is operated to rotate a shaft 123 and cam 170. Block 120 is raised and arm 140 is released. If a perforation is sensed arm 141 moves arm 160 to a position as shown wherein end 166 of arm 160 is situated between block 120 and punch 111. As block 120 is retracted projection 165 of arm 160 is retained in hollow 125 in block 120 and the punch is moved while the sensor is withdrawn from document 101. If a perforation is not present (Fig. 2, not shown) projection 165 is situated below hollow 124 and when block 120 is retracted punch 111 is not moved. The punch may be coupled to a relay 180 to provide electrical output signals or an output switch may be operated by arm 141 or arm 160.
