Abstract
1291722 Hydraulic systems; cooling; multidisc brakes FERODO Ltd 27 July 1970 [29 July 1969] 38077/69 Headings F2E and F2F A road or rail vehicle retarder system comprises a multi-disc friction brake 2, 4 working in cooling liquid in a retarder 1 and actuatable by an actuator 7, a pump 9 connected to circulate cooling liquid through the retarder 1 via pipes 8 and 25 which pipe 8 includes a manually adjustable throttle valve 15 and a pipe 12 connected upstream of the valve 15 and leading to the actuator 7 to transmit a pressure differential to the actuator 7, on partial closure of valve 15, to cause actuation of the retarder 1. The pipe 12 runs from the low-pressure point of a Venturi 26 and when the valve 15 is partially closed by the driver, or the vehicle travelling down a gradient, the pressure at the inlet end of the pipe 12 is increased. The valve 15 which cannot be fully closed, comprises a member 16 movable by a Bowden cable 19 to alter the flow area of a bore 18. The pump 9 which is driven by a chain 10 from a propeller shaft 20 is of the sliding vane type of positive displacement pump and a heat exchanger 24 and reservoir 27 with vent 28 may be included in the pump circuit. The friction brake comprises steel rotor plates 2 keyed to a member 3 which is keyed to the propeller shaft 20 and stator plates 4 faced on both sides with sintered metallic friction discs 5 and in actuation both sets of plates 2, 4 are movable axially in a casing 6 with springs being provided to separate the plates in the non-actuated condition; in a modification the rotor plates are faced with friction material. As shown the actuator takes the form of a piston 7 but it may alternatively comprise a number of pistons or an hydraulic piston-and-cylinder outside the retarder 1 with mechanical means for transmitting forces to the retarder.
