1291096 Charging coke ovens CARL STILL 23 Dec 1969 62614/69 Heading F4B Horizontal coke oven batteries are charged from the bunkers of a lorry at a rate of between ¢ and 1/6 of a ton of charge per second, a residual amount of coal being left in the bunkers or their outlets after charging to prevent gas emission. A uniform negative pressure of 2-6 mm. water gauge is established in the ascension pipes of the coke oven chambers during charging. Levelling of the charge in the chamber is commenced when 2/3 of the total charge has been emptied into the coking chamber and is effected by a levelling bar which passes through a sealing sleeve in the levelling part of the chamber.
