Abstract
1291086 Calenders JOH KLEINEWEFERS SOHNE 30 Oct 1969 [27 Nov 1968] 53283/69 Heading D2A Means for setting a gap between rolls which are mounted in housing members, comprises means for relatively displacing the rolls transverse to their axes, and coupling means which couple the housing members, the coupling means comprising limiting means which set themselves as the rolls are brought together so that when the rolls are relatively separated the limiting means limits the roll gap to a predetermined distance. In the 1st embodiment (as shown) cylinder 13 is attached to one housing, and piston rod 14 to the next adjacent. When the rolls are moved into abutment, the piston moves into cylinder 13, and draws in hydraulic fluid through line 19, which has check valve 23. Cylinder 20 is arranged in line 19 to hold sufficient fluid to allow piston 14, and hence roll housing to rise to provide the desired gap. A spring-loaded piston in this cylinder ensures that fluid is expressed from this cylinder. Valve 24 allows fluid to return to hydraulic line 25 when it is desired to separate the stack, e.g. to replace a roll. These valves 24 may be electrically remote-controlled from console 28. In other embodiments, not shown, the gap is provided for by lost-motion couplings, e.g. an enlarged member enclosed in a recess. In a second embodiment, coupling means may comprise a coupling member mounted on the housing of one roll, and a toothed catch mounted on the housing of the other, arranged to engage the coupling member when the rolls are in contact, a degree of lost-motion being provided for, either by housing an enlarged head on the member in a recess in the first housing, or by providing a toothed catch slidable in a housing between limits. The toothed catch preferably has ratchet-type toothing, the member complementary toothing, and the catch may be spring-biased towards the member. In a third embodiment the coupling means may alternatively be a cylindrical, threaded coupling member having a nut thereon, which may be adjusted when the rolls are in engagement. Ratchet means being provided to prevent rotation of the nut on separatory movement, a degree of lost motion being allowed either by housing the nut in a recess, or by providing an enlarged head to the coupling member, housed in a recess in a roll housing. In the second and third embodiments above the ratchet or toothed catch may be arranged to be disengaged manually, or by remote control electrically or hydraulically. In a fourth embodiment, the coupling means comprises a threaded coupling member freely rotatably mounted on one housing, which can be rotated by drive means into a threaded bore in the other housing member, until the rolls come into abutment, the roll gap being allowed for by then reversing the drive means for a specific number of turns. There may be provided a vertical stack of rolls, when common drive means may be provided, engageable and disengageable by electromagnetic clutches. In all embodiments, the rolls are preferably mounted in housings having two portions joined by quick-release fastenings, the first carrying the roll bearings, and the second the coupling means. The stack may be alternate steel and paper rolls.
