Abstract

1291081 Roll grinding CHURCHILL MACHINE TOOL CO Ltd 3 Feb 1970 [11 Feb 1969] 7275/69 Heading B3D A machine for grinding a roll R comprises a pair of roll journal-supporting rests 5, a grinding wheel 6 arranged for traversing longitudinally of the roll R, at least two measuring devices 11, Fig. 2, adjacent each rest 5, each arranged to produce an output signal in accordance with the position of the roll surface relative to a fixed axis parallel to the wheel traverse; and means for effecting rest adjustment so that a desired output signal relationship is achieved, corresponding to a required location of the roll R relative to the wheel traverse. The device 11 of each pair may be symmetrically disposed probes for directing compressed air jets on to the surface of the preferably rotating roll R, a corresponding differential pressure sensor 14 being operatively connected to a control (15), Fig. 4 (not shown), for governing a feed motor (16) of a block 10, supporting an adjustable hydrostatic or other bearing pad 9 of the corresponding rest 5, which supports one roll journal in conjunction with a second, fixed pad 8. A shield plate 17 may protect the probes 11 during roll loading and unloading. In alternative constructions (not shown) mechanical probes may actuate fluid pressure or electrical control circuits. The arrangement may be calibrated by balancing the pressure sensors 14 using a previously ground roll, or by the use of set-up gauges, positionable on the rests 5 relative to a datum face on a griding wheel carriage or respective datum faces adjacent the rests 5 on a machine bed.
