Abstract

129,105. Hubble, A. G., and Crook, A. E. July 2, 1918. Lids, bayonet-joint; lids secured by key locks; sealing-labels and the like.-Relates to closing- means for milk churns, containers, and vessels, and of the type described in Specification 121,189, in which the lid is provided with a skirt overhanging the top portion or neck of the vessel, and co-operating wedging-devices are provided on the skirt and neck for tightening a coned part of the lid on to its seating in the neck of the vessel. Locking-means are provided on the lid to engage teeth on the churn when the lid has been tightened. The churn is formed or fitted around the neck a, Figs. 1 and 2, with short lengths of inclined or helical ribs or threads b, and the inner portion of the skirt c' is formed or fitted with studs or projections e to engage with the under surface b<1> of the ribs b for tightening the lid on its seat a<1>. An upper set of studs e<1> may be provided to engage the upper surface b<3> of the ribs to assist in loosening the lid. Notches f in the rim. or head a<2>. at the top of the churn are provided for the passage of the studs. For looking the lid, teeth or projections b<2> on the outer surface of one or more of the ribs engage a lock or catch device g<5> on the skirt c'. The wing-like latch g<5>, Figs. 4 and 5, formed with a tooth on its inner surface, is carried by a. vertical pin g<2> loosely mounted in a rectangular casing g secured over an aperture g<1> in the skirt c<1>. A spring h forces the latch g<5> into engagement with the teeth b<2>. When the latch is pulled out to disengage its tooth from the teeth b<2>, the coiled part of the spring h depresses the latch so that a projection g<7> on the bottom of the latch engages the bottom g<4> of the casing g and prevents the return of the latch. To return the latch into locking engagement, the projecting lower end of the pin g<2> is pressed upwardly. A hook device, key, or pin may be provided for operating the latch. A sealing label or card may be inserted in a frame m at the front of the casing g. Two blade springs n, Fig. 6, with bent ends n or pawl-like teeth are provided in the frame to engage side notches in the card, so that the card cannot be removed without mutilating it. Or a circular frame to receive a circular card may be provided. The shirt portion of the lid may consist of a ring with a flange c<3>, Fig. 1, at the top, to which the flange or rim c<4> of the lid proper. which consists of a dished sheet-metal disk, is joined.
