1290252 Coded records MARCONI CO Ltd 2 Dec 1970 [26 March 1970] 14716/70 Heading G4M A label to be attached to goods for sale has binary data recorded in bit areas having the same overall dimension in a given direction, ; each bit area comprising a pair of code elements having different physical characteristics, e.g. black and white, no two adjacent elements being the same, and the ratio of the dimensions of the elements of each pair in the given direction is a predetermined value or its reciprocal, depending on the bit value. For example "0" may be represented by a white: black ratio of 1:3 and "1" by a white: black ratio of 3:1. The elements may alternatively be magnetic. Such a label may be sensed by a hand-held scanning pen having a scanning aperture not substantially larger than the widest code element.
