Abstract
1290032 Manganese doped silver halides AGFA-GEVAERT AG 20 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 55270/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] A silver halide crystal doped with manganese ions is used as a detector and to record the tracks of ionizing particles. The manganese is preferably present in an amount of from 500 to 1500 p.p.m. based on the weight of silver halide. The Mn may be present in the tetravalent form. The preferred halide is silver halide. The doped crystal may be prepared by adding a solution of MnCl 2 to pure AgCl powder such that the product contains 1000 p.p.m. of Mn. The doped AgCl is then melted and introduced between two heated glass plates held apart by spacers. Cooling produced a polycrystalline sample which could be rendered monocrystalline by heating under pressure in an atmosphere inert to the sample, e.g. Cl 2 +N 2 . After exposure to ionizing radiation, the crystal is exposed to a high pressure xenon lamp fitted with a filter to restrict the wavelength of the emitted radiation. Alternatively the irradiated detector may be exposed to pulses of short wave light whilst a synchronously pulsed electric field is applied to the detector. Either of these treatments causes amplification of the damage track and render it available for study.
