1289890 Lasers COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 14 Oct 1970 [14 Oct 1969] 48890/70 Heading H1C In a laser in which transverse modes are minimized by using resonator mirrors and an active medium of small diameter relative to the resonator length, the active medium 3, Fig. 1, is of larger diameter than that of the mirrors 4, 5, and one mirror 4 has a non-uniform reflectivity to minimize the effect of mechanical, e.g. thermal, displacement of the active medium and the consequential misalignment of the optical system. The mirrors may be planar or partspherical, as shown, and comprise reflective coatings on respective glass substrates 1, 2. The coating on mirror 4 is formed so that its optical thickness decreases outwardly from its optical axis 7, and the reflectivity R characteristic with respect to radial distance r from the optical axis may be as shown in Fig. 2, the absence of an abrupt transition from an operational reflectivity value to zero avoiding peripheral diffraction effects.
