Abstract

1289211 Reduction of sulphur dioxide to sulphur STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 20 April 1970 [24 April 1969] 18684/70 Heading C1A Gaseous sulphur dioxide is reduced to sulphur in a process which comprises effecting the reduction in two separate stages in separate reactors, the reducing agent in the first stage being a normally gaseous hydrocarbon and the reducing agent in the second stage being the reducing gases produced as by-products in the first stage, wherein the reduction in both stages is catalytically induced, and either R in the first stage is less than 2 or the reaction mixture from the first stage is cooled before the second stage where R is the mole ratio of SO 2 in the feed gas to the CH 4 (or stoichiometrically equivalent amount of other hydrocarbon) in the feed gas. The preferred catalyst is alumina, e.g. bauxite.
