Abstract

1288972 Alkali metal monofluorophosphate D C EVANS (Ozark Mahaning Co) 9 Sept 1969 44490/69 Heading C1A A continuous process for the manufacture of alkali metal monofluorophosphate (e.g. NaPO 3 F) comprises heating an intimate mixture of finely divided alkali metal fluoride, and alkali metal metaphosphate in a graphite lined reactor under conditions such that a layer of solid reactants is maintained over the molten reaction mass and the molten product is cooled by exposure to the atmosphere. The reactants are brought together in stoichiometric quantities and heated to a temperature above that required for fusion of the reaction mix. An apparatus is described which consists of a horizontal cylindrical metal body lined with graphite, with two graphite-lined inlet pipes attached to the upper side of the body. A silver outlet conduit is. attached to one end of the body which discharges the product into a graphite lined tray over which air is blown to cool the product. Reference is made to a rotary drum cooler or prilling tower as alternative means of cooling. An example describes the manufacture of sodium monofluorophosphate, and lithium and potassium monofluorophosphates are referred to.
