Abstract
1,186,664. Alkali metal fluorophosphate. CHEMISCHE WERKE ALBERT. 20 March, 1968 [8 April, 1967], No. 13562/68. Heading C1A. A continuous process for the production of an alkali metal (A.M.) mono-fluorophosphate (e.g. Na2PO3F) comprises making a mixture of an A.M. fluoride (or A.M. hydrogen fluoride and an A.M. salt whose acid component is preferably volatile under reaction conditions) and an A.M. meta-, pyro-, or poly-phosphate (or a phosphate which gives one of these on heating) ; continuously feeding this mixture into a heated reactor and simultaneously discharging product, the conditions of feeding, heating and discharging being such that a layer of solid reactant is maintained on top of the molten reaction mixture. The M2O : P2O5 ratio may be about 2 : 1 and the mixture may include P2O5. The said acid component may be carbonate. The temperature may be 625-750‹ C. The M2O : P2O5 : F ratio may be 2 : 1 : 2. The starting material may contain NaF and (NaPO3)3. The phosphate used may be Mandrell salt, i.e. (NaPO3)n where n is 40-70, Na5P3O10, tripolyphosphates, Na2H2P2O7 or NaH2PO4. However when using phosphates whose condensation supplies water it is preferably to carry this out prior to the process of the invention. If the phosphate is such that AM : Phosphorus ratio is higher than 1 : 1, e.g. Na5P3O10, then P2O5 may be added to give an M2O : P2O5 of about 2 : 1. The parts of the reaction vessel in contact with the reaction mixture may be made of graphite, iron, silver or platinum and the vessel may be cylindrical, conical or funnel shaped.
