Abstract

1288707 Stratified fuel charges; charging under pressure; purifying exhaust; heating charge P AUGUST 19 April 1971 [17 Dec 1970] 22798/71 Heading F1B An I.C. engine has two carburetters or injection devices for supplying mixtures of different richness in different paths with a phase displacement therebetween to a cylinder with a sparking plug, the path adjacent the sparking plug having a pressure device for introducing the richer mixture only when the cylinder has been charged with fresh gas or combustion air to give a multilayer charge with the ignitable richer mixture in the region of the spark-plug and with air excess in the whole mixture. When the engine operates in the lower and middle speed and load ranges an engine-driven rotary compressor 13 draws rich mixture from a carburetter 10 which is downstream of a filter 12. The piston induces combustion air from a carburetter along passages 15, 17 to ports 3 to scavenge the burnt gases which leave via port 4. As the air is compressed by the rising piston the valve 9 is rotated to admit the rich mixture, which has been heated by a baffle plate 26, to form a rich layer in the region of the spark-plug 8. Exhaust gas may be mixed with air from the carburetter in the idling and low speed and load ranges. In the middle to upper speed and load range the carburetter 11 supplies a weak mixture which is enriched at full load. Exhaust gas passes through an afterburner 18 having a main passage 25 containing a control flap 19 and a surrounding afterburner chamber 22 which may contain a catalyst. Exhaust gas passes via passages 20 and the afterburner 22 to mix with exhaust gas from passage 25 in chamber 24. In the lower speed range the closed flap 19 directs all the exhaust gas through the afterburner and progressively reduces this as speed increases so that at full load 85-90% of the exhaust gas passes straight down passage 25. The engine may be a four-stroke or rotary piston engine. The carburetters may be replaced by two fuel injection systems.
