Abstract

1288561 Tube joints ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 11 July 1969 [19 July 1968] 34536/68 Heading F2G [Also in Division F4] A method of constructing a tube and tubeplate assembly suitable for a heat exchanger comprises supporting the tubes 3 in the required relationship, e.g. by backing plate 1, applying a thermosetting plastics liquid, e.g. an organosulphur compound, to the mould formed by tubes 3, plate 1 and housing 4, and curing, to form a resilient tubeplate 10. Felt rings 5 may surround the tubes adjacent to apertures 2 to relieve local stress concentrations. The tubes may be plugged whilst applying sufficient thermosetting liquid to produce a lead-in (7, Fig. 2, not shown) to each tube. A sheet of compressible material (9, Fig. 4, not shown) such as foam rubber may be inserted between the backing plate and the thermosetting liquid, to prevent it bonding to the plate, and allow expansion of the housing 4 relative to the tubes by compressing sheet (9). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,181,256.
