Abstract
1288459 Oxygen generator U S DIVERS CO 1 June 1970 [2 June 1969] 26377/70 Heading C1A An O 2 generator comprises a core of an O 2 - generating substance surrounded by a layer of Li or Be oxide or hydroxide or Li, Na, K or Be fluoride or chloride, or mixtures thereof, which absorbs the heat generated. The core may be of a substance which liberates O 2 on ignition, e.g. alkali metal chlorates, perchlorates, superoxides, or permanganates, preferably NaClO 3 or KClO 3 , mixed with a fuel, e.g. Fe, steel wool, charcoal, or Mg (2À5-8%) and optionally with a fibrous binder, e.g. asbestos or glass (up to 8%) and a combustion aid, e.g. MnO 2 or BaO 2 (4-8%). These materials are mixed to a paste, compressed at 350-5600 kg./ cm.<SP>2</SP>, and dried. The zone of ignition is fuelenriched. Alternatively, the core material may react with moisture and CO 2 to produce O 2 , e.g. Li 2 O 2 . The heat absorbing sleeve may be formed by casting the molten material or by compressing powder, or the material may be dispersed in layers of glass fibres or on a woven screen. Between the core and sleeve, and at the base of the core, there may be a layer of an insulating filter material, e.g. asbestos or glass fibre. The O 2 passes through this and then through a layer which removes other gases, e.g. of CuCl. SiO 2 gel or activated Al 2 O 3 , and Na 2 O 2 .
