Abstract

1288268 Laminates UNION CARBIDE CORP 13 June 1969 [17 June 1968 (6)] 29995/69 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Laminates are prepared by bonding solid surfaces together with an adhesive substance formed by decomposing in situ the peroxide radical of a silicon peroxide comprising a peroxide radical bonded to silicon thereof through a peroxy oxygen atom and also a functional group bonded to silicon thereof and being either of hydrogen, vinyl, allyl, isocyanatoalkyl having 3 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, at least 3 of which are in sequential order separating the isocyanato moiety from the Si atom, glycidyloxypropyl, beta - (3,4 - epoxycyclohexyl)ethyl, gamma-mercaptopropyl or gamma-methacryloxypropyl. Surfaces bonded may be organic or inorganic. Decomposition of the peroxide is conveniently carried out by heating. The peroxides may be applied to the surfaces as such or as a solution or dispersion. Alternatively they may be dispersed in the medium of an organic material providing a surface to be bonded. Examples describe the preparation of laminates from 3 plies of glass cloth or mat and 4 plies of polypropylene; from plate glass and low or high density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyurethane, poly-1,3(2,2,4,4-tetramethyl) cyclobutylene carbonate, ABS resin, P.V.C. resin, polysulphone resin, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers or plate glass; from aluminium sheet and polyethylene, polypropylene, polytetrafluoromethylene, ABS resin, P.V.C. resin, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, cured dimethylsilicone rubber or aluminium sheet; from plywood and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, polyethylene or polypropylene; from stainless or carbon steel and polyethylene; from copper and polyethylene; from cotton cloth and polypropylene; from polyethylene and P.V.C. resin, polysulphone resin, ABS resin, polystyrene, polyethyleneterephthalate, polyhexamethyleneadipamide or transparent cellulose sheet; from polyethyleneterephthalate and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers; from poly- 1,3(2,2,4,4-tetramethyl)cyclobutylene carbonate and poly(dimethylsiloxane) rubber or ethylenevinyl acetate copolymers; and from a diol chain extended polyester polyurethane, polypropylene polytetrafluoroethylene or a fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymer and polyethylene or polypropylene; using as silicon peroxied bonding agents vinyl- or allyl-tris(tertiary-butylperoxy) silane, vinyl- or allyl-methyl bis-(tertiary-butylperoxy) silane, tris(tertiary-butylperoxy) silane, alpha - methacryloxypropyl tris(tertiary - butylperoxy) silane, vinyl dimethoxy (tertiary-butylperoxy) silane, isocyanatopropyl tris(tertiarybutylperoxy) silane, allyl (tertiary-butylperoxy) tetrasiloxane, vinyl methyl bis-(alpha,alphadimethylbenzylperoxy) silane, vinyl tris(alpha,- alpha-dimethylbenzylperoxy) silane, vinyl trimethoxysilane, allyl- or vinyl-(tertiary-butylperoxy) siloxane aligomer, and vinyldiacetoxy- (tertiary-butylperoxy) silane.
