Abstract

1288191 Apparatus for catalytic synthesis of denterated methanol CHARLES E FROSST & CO 19 April 1971 [22 April 1970] 9891/71 Heading B1F [Also in Division C2] An apparatus for the catalytic synthesis of methanol-d 4 comprises a catalyst tower (5), having a thermometer (4) and a heating element (6) and containing a methanol synthesis catalyst up to but not above the opening to the conduit (10), a gas reservoir (9) connected to the catalyst tower (5) by conduits (10) and (11), valves (V 1 ), (V 2 ) and (V 3 ), a pressure gauge (P), a product collecting trap (7) cooled by a jacket (8), a conventional laboratory pump (1), a glass trap (2) and a cooling jacket containing liquid nitrogen (3). In operation, the gases are admitted tothe reservoir (9) with valve (V 1 ) open and valves (V 2 ) and (V 3 ) closed. (V 1 ) is then closed and (V 2 ) is opened, permitting the gases to enter the tower (5) when they react, the product being collected in trap (7), the latter being arranged so as to facilitate recirclation of the reacting gas. The product trap (7) is emptied by removing the cooling jacket (8), and opening valve (V 3 ), valve (V 2 ) being closed, the product being removed under reduced pressure to trap. (2).
