Abstract
128,810. Bates, A. J., and Bates Expanded Steel Truss Co. Sept. 24, 1918. Cutting expanded metal; shearing; shear blades; expanding; straightening.-In rotary shearing- machines, particularly ior slitting metal beams prior to expanding, the feed mechanism is controlled by one of the shearing-members in such a way that the feed is not commenced until the shearing-members are about to begin a shearing cycle, and is cut off as soon as tne cycle is completed. The presence of finished work at the delivery end of the machine also prevents the starting of the feed. The rotary shear-members 15, 16, Figs. 2 and 4, are geared together by teeth 17 at one side of their bearing surfaces, and are driven continuously by a motor. The beam 27 is carried on the guide 25, Fig. 11, which is stepped as shown tu take different sizes of beams. Figs. 18 and 19 show sections of the shearing parts of the circumference of the rotary members 15, 16, the shearelements 88 of the upper member 15 extending unbroken round the whole of the circumference, while the shear-elements 88<1> of the lower member 16 are in sections in staggered relation. At a point where the shearing-elements are as shown in Fig. 18, two slits are made in the beam 27, but at a point between two sections of a lower shearing-element, as shown in Fig. 19, only one slit is made; thus producing two lines of slits broken by integral parts 96 in staggered relation, as shown in Fig. 15. The rolls 39, 40, Figs. 2 and 4, subsequently straighten out the beam, guide-flanges for the beam being provided on the roll 40. The beam then passes to the rollers 53 on the table 51, these rollers also being provided with stepped guides similar to those on the carrier 25. The shearing-member 16 is driven continuously from the motor shaft 23, Fig. 2. The upper shearing- member 15 is driven by the member 16 through the teeth 17, and the rolls 39, 40 are driven from the shaft of the member 15 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The feed mechanism comprises a sprocket wheel 30, carrying a chain 29 which has projections 31 adapted to engage behind the beam 27 and drive it forward. The sprocket wheel 30 is driven from the shaft 33 through a lost-motion mechanism designed to admit of slight variations of speed of the shearing-members. This mechanism consists of arms 34 keyed to the shaft 33 and provided with flanges 35, the springs 37 bearing between these flanges and flanges 36 on the wheel 30. The feed shaft 33 is intermittently driven through the toothed wheel 34 by a pinion 55 on the motor shaft 23 having clutch teeth which are engaged by a movable clutch on the shaft 23 by the action of the clutch lever 58, Figs. 2, 4, and 6. The clutch lever 58 is normally held by the spring 61 to keep the clutch in engagement, but at the end of a shearing cycle, the cam 66, Fig. 6, on the lower shearing-member 16, causes the lever 63 to move the sliding rod 62, which draws the clutch lever 58 to the left in Fig. 6 and disengages the clutch, thus stopping the feed. The block 75 on the latch 68 is drawn by the spring 74 to the right of the clutch lever 58 to hold it in this position. When the operator has placed a fresh beam on the carrier, he depresses the pedal 76, Figs. 2 and 4, and the cable 79, which passes over the sheaves 81, 80 draws the lever 70 to the left; this does not, however, release the clutch lever 58 from the latch 68. The pivoted latch 86 engages behind the block 84 on the bar 71 and holds the parts in this position. When the continuouslyrotating shearing-member 16 arrives at a point corresponding to' the beginning of its shearing cycle, the cam 85 on the member 16 depresses the bar 71 to the position shown in Fig. 6, thus releasing the clutch lever 58 from the latch 68, and allowing the feed to start. The highest portion of the cam 85 releases the bar 71 from the latch 86, whereupon the bar 71 returns to the position shown in dotted lines. If any finished work is on the table 51, the crank-lever 83 is depressed, and the cable 82, which is connected to the cable 79, prevents the initiation of the feeding operations by the operator.
