1288005 Herbicidal imidazolidinediones CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 21 Aug 1970 [22 Aug 1969 20 July 1970] 40501/70 Addition to 1247397 Heading C2C Novel imidazolidinediones of the general Formula I wherein Y is oxygen or sulphur; R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-10 aliphatic or cycloaliphatic optionally substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine or C 1-4 alkoxy, with the proviso that when Y is sulphur, R<SP>1</SP> is optionally substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl; R<SP>2</SP> is C 6-15 aryl optionally substituted by trifluoromethyl and/or up to two fluorine, chlorine, bromine, nitro or C 1-4 alkyl or alkoxy; and R<SP>3</SP> is acetyl or carbamoyl in which the nitrogen is monosubstituted by chloroacetyl or C 6-15 aryl substituted by 1 or 2 substituents selected from fluorine, chlorine,- bromine, trifluoromethyl, nitro or C 1-4 alkyl or alkoxy may be prepared by reacting an imidazolidine dione of the Formula II (a) with an isocyanate R<SP>5</SP>NCO wherein R<SP>5</SP> is the same as the monosubstitution for the carbamoyl group R<SP>3</SP> to produce the compound I in which R 3 is carbamoyl, or (b) by reaction of II with ketene to form the compound I in which R<SP>3</SP> is acetyl. The imidazolidine diones II may be prepared by reacting a 1-cyanoformamide or 1-cyanothioformamide R<SP>1</SP>-NH-CY-CN with an isocyanate R<SP>2</SP>CNO in the presence of a base catalyst. The 1-cyanoformamide or 1-cyanothioformamide may be prepared by reaction of an isocyanate or isothiocyanate R<SP>1</SP>NCY with KCN in the presence of acid. Herbicidal compositions of the compounds I with biologically inert carriers are effective against weed grasses and broadleaved weeds in post- and pre-emergence applications.
